Access Statement 2011/2012
At
4 Winds Lakeland Tipis we offer a warm welcome to all our visitors
staying at Low Wray campsite and in return we expect all visitors to abide by the
terms and conditions of the company and site.
We understand the natural terrain at
Low Wray campsite can create barriers for some
disabled people and can make
access to campsite facilities difficult if not impossible. In order to ensure the
best possible holiday with
4 Winds Lakeland Tipis we have written an
access statement to explain the
layout of the campsite and what
facilities are available.
Low Wray Campsite
Is a
large campsite located in a beautifully rural and
scenic area on Lake Windermere. During wet weather the
access for wheelchair users is more challenging and
ambulant visitors are advised to wear appropriate footwear. The campsite is owned by the
National Trust and
4 Wind Lakeland Tipis are a tenant. The terrain across the whole
campsite is varied and includes
forested areas, open grass land and dirt tracks. The park does have level access roads to the reception and the
lakeside areas. The reception,
shop, and one of the
children’s play areas have level access. The site has very little lighting in the hours of darkness.
Arrival at Site
The code to gain access for the
campsite is located in a safety deposit box on a grassed area next to the road. An alternative arrangement can be made to meet your access requirements if this proves difficult.
Security Barrier
To access the
campsite you must pass through a security barrier by inputting the appropriate security code. The code can be inputted from your vehicle if you stop close enough.
Parking
Three
parking areas are located next to the toilet and
shower block. The car park consists of compacted earth and as a result there are no
accessible parking bays. Two parking areas are on level ground and are approximately 200yds from the nearest
tipi. The route to the
tipis is on grass which is undulating with a steep incline on uneven ground.
Parking is also available approximately 100yrds from reception and 200yrds from the
accessible toilet and shower facility.
Pathways
The pathways leading to the tipi area consist of uneven compacted earth with small stones and rocks. The pathways become muddy in wet weather.
The Toilet Block
Is located close to the tipis. There is a 6 inch step to get into the toilet block. Once inside there are no accessible cubicles or showers for wheelchair users.
Accessible Toilet and Shower Facility
Low Wray campsite provides an
accessible toilet and shower area. The facility is located approximately ½ a mile from the
tipi site which is accessed over semi rough terrain and at night time no lighting is available on route.
The Tipis
Are accessed by an opening of approximately 3-4ft at the base tapering to 2ft at the top. There is also a deck of approximately 3 inches in height to access the tipi. Inside there is a level floor with a kitchen and cooker at approx 3.5 ft high. Beds are either a pull out futon or air mattresses at floor level.
Tipi Alternatives
The National Trust hires out ‘
Camping Pods’ which are situated within easy access of the
disabled facilities and there are also
camping pitches very close to the facilities.
Future Plans
4 Winds Lakeland Tipis would love to be able to offer
accessible tipi holidays for disabled people. At present due to circumstances beyond our control we have restricted access on site. Our aim is for us to provide an accessible tipi and facilities in the future at which point we will amend our access statement to reflect changes to our tipis.
Booking with Us
If you are a
disabled person and/or you have any
specific access requirements we strongly advise you
contact us to discuss your
access requirements so you can make an informed decision as to the suitability of the
campsite and tipis before you book.
Many thanks
